What is That Thing?

There is a difference between using a power tool for what it is designed for and using it for something completely unrelated.  There is also a difference between using the power tool for something with some ingenuity or using it for something that is dangerous and completely wrong.

Check Out the Milwaukee 2602-22 Hammer Drill/Driver Kit

ToolHQ - Milwaukee 2602-22I was talking with a friend the other day and they made a comment about cordless drills.  They told me that nobody really wants to buy a drill, what they want is to buy the hole in the wall that they are making.  In some ways this makes sense, after all, you are buying the drill in order to complete a specific task.  But even if you could just buy the hole in the wall or the assembled computer desk or an assembled bike, would that be enough for you?  You can use the same argument for a good pair of shoes…you aren’t necessarily buying the walking shoes; you just want to get to the destination.  But with a lousy pair of shoes, getting there can be a pain in the…foot.  So you take a little extra time and pick out the right pair of shoes.

Need Help Putting the Presents Together?

ToolHQ - Christmas TreeIt’s the holiday season once again and no matter how you celebrate it, there are sure to be some gifts opened up later this month.  The holidays are great to begin with, but there is something that makes it even better when you have children around.  They experience Christmas in a completely different way than the adults around them do.  It’s a much bigger deal; more fun and the memories are something that last forever.  They don’t have to worry about all the things that go on behind the scenes, but they get to fully enjoy the results.  And even though it is more fun to have kids around, at least in my opinion, there is definitely some extra work that goes into the process.  Namely putting together all those cool new toys and gadgets that fulfill the kids Christmas lists.

Hammer Drills are a Three in One Tool

Milwaukee 2611-24 M18 18V Hammer Drill Kit - ToolHQThere are many different kinds of power tools, and just as many brands, and it is important to be sure that you are using the right power tool for the job.  You may need to use a corded tool or you may prefer to use cordless tools.  In the past, you would only choose to use a cordless tool when the application called for it, such as being in a remote are or a hard to reach spot with no available power source.  But because the technology has gotten so advanced and cordless tools are nearly as powerful and have the same performance as their corded counterparts, many people choose a cordless tool merely for the convenience that it affords them.  These choices are not just limited to corded and cordless or what brand you prefer, but even what type of specific tool to use for the job.  There are many specialty tools that you can use for a particular purpose and a specific job.  This is even true when it comes to groups of tools such as drills and saws.

There are many different types of drills from cordless and corded, to impact and hammer.  They all serve their specific purpose and have advantages over the others when it comes to a particular job.  For instance, if you were trying to attach plywood or some other lumber to a concrete floor or block wall, you may choose a couple of different methods.  And unless you were going to use some sort of powder actuated tool or a gas driven tool, you would end up having to drill a hole in the concrete or block.  You would want to use a hammer drill because it is specifically designed to drill holes into such material.  It not only rotates the bit for drilling, it has an additional percussion or hammer action the break up the material.  The drill bit then carries the debris material from the hole as the flutes spin.  The hammer drill works in conjunction with a special masonry bit to cut and break its way through the material.  You would not want to use a standard drill to do the same job.  Not only would it not do the job, but you will end up damaging the drill in the process.

Milwaukee 2497-22 M12 12V Hammer Drill and Impact Combo

Milwaukee 2497-22 M12 Hammer Drill Impact Combo - ToolHQThe Milwaukee 2497-22 is a compact 12 volt kit that includes a hammer drill and impact driver.  The 12 volt tools are more compact than their 18 volt counterparts, with the drill weighing in at 2.8 pounds and the impact driver weighing in at 2.3 pounds.  They are extremely light but pack quite a punch.  They offer a lot of power built into the compact design, and do a heck of a job.  The 3/8” hammer drill has 275 in pounds which is class leading in the 12 volt design.  While the ¼” impact driver is going to max out at a best in class 850 in pounds. The impact driver has a hex driver bit, perfect for those hard to torque projects.   Both tools are going to be the most powerful 12 volt tools on the market.  You can’t beat Milwaukee’s quality design and built in power.  Another benefit to the compact design, yet high power is that these tools are great for working in tight places.

They are compact and light enough to be used anywhere and the light weight means that they are not going to wear you out during use.  They are both perfect for working overhead or when fatigue might become a factor.  Plus, being so compact, they do not take up a lot of room in the tool box so they are perfect for taking along to whatever jobsite you may be heading to.  The kit comes with a quick charger and two 12 volt lithium ion batteries which are compatible with the other 12 volt tools in the series. So the batteries and tools will be interchangeable with other tools and batteries in the tool line.

Product Review: Milwaukee 2698-22 18V Cordless M18 Hammer Drill +Metal Saw Combo Kit

Milwaukee 2698-22 18V Cordless M18 Hammer Drill Kit - ToolHQAs a general contractor, this is the perfect starting point for a new collection of tools.  I have recently switched from another brand and Milwaukee has won me over.  I borrowed a couple of Milwaukee tools from a friend to do some no work related projects and was very impressed.  Not only did they handle the work that I needed done, they exceeded what I was expecting from a cordless tool.  Maybe that was because I was used to another manufacturer, but Milwaukee is the way to go.  I have always been very loyal to the other brand, not wanting to switch but I got fed up with the quality of the batteries that I kept running into.  They can replace a battery all right, but it gets old and the time that it takes to make the exchange is time that I could be getting something done.  So the Milwaukee 2698-22 has filled the void very well and I couldn’t be happier.  Continue reading

Product Review: Milwaukee 2605-20 M18 18V Cordless 7/8″ SDS Plus Rotary Hammer Drill

Discount Milwaukee 2605 20 Rotary Hammer Drill - ToolHQThis is a review for the Milwaukee 2605-20 cordless SDS plus hammer drill.  It is not a kit and comes with just the tool, but if you already have some Milwaukee tools, then you don’t need to hear about the quality and power of the battery packs.  You already know how well they perform.  On the other hand, you may be on the fence about this hammer drill.  Well, first of all because it is a Milwaukee, you know what you are getting into.  This tool is tough and it is well built.  In fact, if you didn’t know that it was a cordless version to start with, you probably wouldn’t even be able to guess that it was.  If I attached a cord, not many people would be able to tell the difference.  It has a real weigh to it, like a tool should, but it isn’t over heavy.

It weighs in at about 6 pounds and it is pretty compact as well.  It feels heavy duty without weighing you down and that works great for this kind of tool.  When you are using a cordless hammer drill it is for convenience and portability.  So being compact with a lot of power is a great benefit for where you are going to drag this tool to.  This thing is quickly becoming my favorite tool in the truck.  Even when I have access to power and could use my corded version, I find myself grabbing this one instead.  It’s that good.  You might ask yourself if you need such a powerful cordless hammer drill, but it all depends on what you are doing.  I often find that I need to drill larger holes; up to 2 1/8” with my core bits and this drill does it perfectly.  You can use up to a 7/8” standard drill bit for those other jobs and it handles that just fine.  It has the SD plus chuck which is industry standard for this size drill and they are easy to change out and use.  I also like the pistol grip design; it is just like using your regular drill, only slightly bigger.  The detachable handle is easy to position and helps for keeping the drill steady especially when drilling overhead.  A lot of the reason that I chose this tool was for using it overhead, and the light weight and compact design has worked out well.

Makita 18V 7/8″ SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Drill BHR241Z (BARE BHR241) NEW BHR240

Discount Makita Rotary Hammer Drill BHR241Z - ToolHQThe Makita 18 volt SDS plus rotary hammer drill is a great tool to go along with the other 18 volt tools in Makita’s line of cordless power tools.  It has plenty of power and is easy to use for the professional contractor or the homeowner that wants professional quality tools.  The BHR240 is a great tool to add to your other Makita cordless set or to start a new set.  I bout this particular one because I was so happy with the drill and reciprocating saw that I bought, I wanted to round out my cordless tool set with another great Makita product.  This particular tool is just the bare tool by itself, no charger or batteries, but if you already have another kit, that doesn’t matter.  You will hardly ever be using more than two tools at the same time anyway.

Makita BHP454 Hammer Drill Driver Kit (DC18RA Charger 2x BL1830 Batteries 240V)

This review is for the Makita BHP454 Hammer Drill Driver Kit.  It includes the drill, a carrying case, the DC18RA Australian approved charger, and 2 18v BL180 batteries.  The tool itself is well built and very comfortable in the hand.  It weighs approximately 4.9 lbs which is about 7 oz less than its DeWalt competitor (DCD950).  It is also more compact and slimmer in the hand.  The 4-pole motor can deliver 560 in lbs of maximum torque and with the variable 2-speed design; it offers a wide range of drilling and hammer options.

This is a replacement for Makita’s BHP451 model and is very similar, but has improved torque and balance in my opinion.  I have owned both and am pleased with the subtle changes in this current model.  The tool’s rated capacity for steel is ½”, wood is 2-9/16” and masonry is 5/8”.  It holds its charge under normal operating conditions as rated and can easily meet theses maximum ratings in my experience.  The nice thing about this drill, and the thing that has always impressed my about Makita tools in general is the comfort and the ergonomics.  Their tools always seem to be a little lighter and a little easier to handle for long periods of time.  Most people don’t care about the inner workings of a tool and why it does what it does, they just want to know the basic specs such as voltage and torque.  They also want to know that it does what it says on the box.  Continue reading

Hitachi DH18DL 18V Cordless Lithium SDS Rotary Hammer Drill Kit (inc 2x EBM1830)

Discount Hitachi DH18DL Hammer Drill Kit - ToolHQThis review is for the Hitachi DH18DL 18v cordless lithium rotary hammer drill kit.  This kit includes everything that you need to get started including Hitachi 18v 3.0Ah lithium ion batteries and a 240v approved charger.  The first thing that you will notice with this tool is that it is the pistol grip style, which means that the handle sets farther back on the tool.  This is a feature that many people will not especially like unless you are familiar with this style of tool because it changes the way that the tool is balanced in your hands.  Most drills that I have come across for home use are not the pistol grip style, but you will see it more on job-sites than anywhere else.  Regardless, this tool is well balanced and the pistol grip style makes drilling overhead and in harder to reach places easier because it has a longer reach than the other styles of drills.  Also, for me, I prefer this style anyway, so it is one of the reasons I chose this tool.
